Samantha Jane Brownlee was probably born in Warren County or possibly Mercer County, Illinois, the daughter of Samuel Leaman Brownlee and his wife Sarah Martha Brownlee. Samantha's father died when she was 4 years of age, and her mother remarried William Teas Patterson. Samantha's mother and step-father both died in Richmond during 1892 and are buried there.

Samantha married James Lee Henderson on 13 September 1860 in Mercer County, Illinois. The 1860 US Census gives Samantha as a school teacher, and living in the home of her future mother-in-law, Jane (Lee) Henderson. Samantha's first two daughters, Leola F. and Sarah E., died as infants and were buried in the Brownlee cemetery of rural Mercer County, Illinois. Daugter Sada B. was born in Illinois about 1864, and daughter Jennie Alice was born in Iowa during 1868. Samantha and family were living in Albia, Monroe County, Iowa during the 1870 census, and were in Richmond by the 1880 census. About June 1897, Samantha and James moved to Los Angeles, California, hoping for an improvement in James' health, but he died 15 August 1897. His body was returned to Richmond for burial, and Samantha returned to Richmond to live with her daughter. She was survived by 2 of her 4 daughters.
