Following the Civil War, James and his brother Robert Alexander Henderson moved with their families to Albia, Monroe County, Iowa. Brother Clark Ebenezer Henderson, still single, was a school teacher in Albia. By the 1880 census, James and his younger brother Clark Ebenezer Henderson had settled in Richmond Township, Franklin County, Kansas. About June 1897, two months before his death, James moved to Los Angeles, California hoping for improvement in his health.
James and Samantha were the parents of 4 daughters; Leola F. and Sara E. died as infants and were buried in the Brownlee cemetery, Mercer County, Illinois. Daughters Sada B., born in Illinois, and Jennie Alice, born in Iowa, were living with their parents in the 1880 census of Richmond Township.
Also buried at Richmond Cemetery is Rachel M. (Henderson) Gowdy, a sister of James. Her husband John Clark Gowdy and daughter Etta Lee Gowdy are buried there as well.
