Butch was the youngest of five children born to Donald R. Hanes, Sr. and his wife, Marie B. Schoen. Butch served in the US Military and then from 1956 to 1974 he was employed for Illinois Bell Telephone, as a supervisor at the Chicago loop office. Butch married Miss Eunice Ann Wolfe, a daughter of Leonard A. Wolfe and his wife, Dorothy A. Paszek. Butch and Eunice celebrated their wedding on April 11, 1959 in Edgar, Wisconsin. They had four children; a son and three daughters. Following the death of Butch, Eunice remarried in 1979 to Edward Frederick.
