Miss Dorothy Hugo, 89, a native of Amsterdam, died this morning at 5:30 at the Willing Helpers Home in Johnstown where she resided. She had been in failing health for several years and had been seriously ill for the past six months.
Miss Hugo was born in Amsterdam on Oct. 28, 1875, a daughter of John H. and Margaret Schumacker Hugo.
She attended the local schools in Amsterdam and graduated from Berea College in Ohio and the Amsterdam City Hospital School of Nursing. For a number of years she served as head surgical nurse at the Amsterdam Hospital.
During World War I she served in France and England with the U.S. Army Nurse Corps, and following her overseas duty, was on the staff of Flager General Hospital in St. Augustine, Fla.
She returned to Amsterdam following her release from service and continued her nursing career until 1938 when she moved to Johnstown and took the position as headmother at the Willing Helpers Home. She continued In this capacity until 1943, when she became a resident of the home.
Miss Hugo was a member of St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Amsterdam and Johnstown Post 472, American Legion.
Her only survivors are several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held at the Willing Helpers Home Tuesday afternoon at 2:30, the Rev. Robert H. Broak, pastor of St. John's Episcopal Church in Johnstown, officiating.
Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Amsterdam.
