ROY 'DON' BARKLEY - Born October 8, 1928 at Winona Shannon Co MO, the son of John William BARKLEY & Esther Olive HARROD. He died July 31, 1982, on highway 60 in Carter Co MO, en route to a hospital in Poplar Bluff MO.

On October 23, 1948, Don was united in marriage to Mrs. Lois Oneda CAMPBELL DOWNS at Salem Fulton Co AR, and to this union four children were born, Donita, Johnny, Terry & Gary. Lois brought to the marriage an infant son, Billy Joe DOWNS.

Don was of the Christian faith, having accepted Jesus as his Lord at a young age, and later placing fellowship with a Pentecostal church in Fremont.

Don later married Mary Beth HOAGLAND of Fremont Carter Co MO, adopting her children Tod and Virginia.

He attended college in Columbia, Boone Co., MO following a tour of duty in the U. S. Army, serving in Korea. He began an apprenticeship with Horner NORTON as a carpenter and building contractor, and thus began a career of many years building homes, apartments and commercial buildings all over the state of Missouri. His greatest passion, however, was working with livestock and he spent most of his later years buying and selling cattle, hogs and horses in Missouri and Arkansas. He also learned the art of auctioneering from his father, and conducted numerous home and farm auctions in Shannon and surrounding counties.

Don liked to sing and dance, and was very social. He had a charismatic personality and made countless friends and acquaintances throughout his lifetime. He was interested in American History and in politics, and even campaigned for sheriff of Shannon County at one time. He enjoyed reading detective and western novels. Don also liked to hunt and fish, and spent most of his time outdoors.

His nicknames were 'Slick', given him by Lois's uncle Bernie NORRIS, and 'Jeeter', from a character in the movie Tobacco Road, given him by his stepson Billy Joe DOWNS.
Don was preceded in death by his sister Lillian in 1942, brother Bill in 1960, and father John in 1975.

He is survived by daughter Donita SIMPSON HERBST (Steve), Cartersville GA; son Johnny BARKLEY (Vicki PARTRIDGE), Winona; son Terry BARKLEY (Reta BRADLEY), Birch Tree; son Gary BARKLEY (Shirley BLAND BRAWLEY), Winona; and stepson Billy Joe DOWNS, Winona.
