Leila B. Stiwinter, 82, of Glenville's Norton community, died unexpectedly Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at her residence.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 29, at Yellow Mountain Baptist Church with the Revs. Keith Ashe, Johnny Norris and Everette Wilson officiating. Burial was in Stewart Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandsons.

A native and lifelong resident of Jackson County, she was an avid cook and gardener. She was a member of Yellow Mountain Baptist Church, where she served as librarian. She was a daughter of the late William and Sally Jane Gregory Buchanan.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Jonathan "Bugs" Stiwinter; three brothers, Fred, Lyda and Theodore Buchanan; and one grandson.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, J. B. Stiwinter; one daughter, Shirley S. Rice of Pickens, S.C.; three sons, Alvin Stiwinter of Easley, S.C., Lewis Stiwinter of Cashiers and J.R. Stiwinter of Cullowhee; five sisters, Mary Rogers, Maude Bryson and Alice Fox, all of Cullowhee, Mattie Mason of Glenville, and Lucille Webb of Cleveland, Ga.; two brothers, Dee Buchanan of Fort Worth, Texas, and Vero Buchanan of Candler; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to WestCare Hospice, 132 Sylva Plaza, Sylva, NC 28779.
