Gilbert McCawley Berry was born on January 8, 1931, to Hugh J. Berry and Leona E. McCawley. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Nelson Berry and Ruth Christian Berry. His maternal grandparents were Alonzo McCawley and Laura B. Sadler McCawley.

When he was 22, on September 15, 1953, Gilbert married Betty Whitson, the love of his life.

Gilbert was a farmer; an employee of the Sutton-Anderson Funeral Home, and a Senior Vice-President and Director of the Jackson County Bank. He also served his community as a member of the Gainesboro Rotary Club, the Jackson County Industrial Board, and the Jackson County Lions Club, director for the Jackson County Soil Conservation District and a director of Jackson Bank and Trust. He was a member of the Gainesboro First United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Tannehill Lodge 133 of the Free and Accepted Masons and was an Al Menah Shriner.

Gilbert died on May 4, 2016, in Gainesboro, Jackson County, Tennessee, where he had lived all of his life. His death left empty his place at Miss Betty's side and his work for the Gainesboro community.
