Peter Buell Allen was born in the Beekman Patent in Dutchess County, New York. His parents were Moses Allen and Chloe Ward. His family moved to Bennington County, Vermont after the Revolution and then on to western New York as soon as it was open to settlement - about 1796. He married Mary Peterson, 25 Sep 1796, place uncertain. They settled in what would become the town of Richmond in Ontario, Co.

1806, the first Masonic lodge, the Genessee Lodge, No. 32, was organized in Ontario County. Some of the first members of the lodge were Peter Allen and his brother Nathaniel. Nathaniel was at one time Master.

In 1808 Peter was one of the Vestrymen of St. Paul's Church, Honeoye (later Richmond), New York. Peter and Nathanial had donated land for the church building.

In 1812, he was a supervisor representing Richmond in the county legislature. In 1816, he served in the New York Assembly as the Representative from Ontario Co.

Peter served as Lt Col in the 20th Regiment of the NY Militia in the War of 1812. He was taken captive at the Battle of Queenston Heights on the Niagara River, but later released with the other officers and soldiers. The Regiment became the 22nd of the 39th Brigade, 7th Division.

After the War he continued to serve in the militia - was promoted to Brigadier General of the 39th Brigade in July of 1815. He resigned in 1817 in preparation to leave New York.

He left Ontario County, New York in 1817, settling in what would become Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. He had nine children all of whom married in Vigo County and many of his descendants remained for many years and a few still live in the area.

Allen was instrumental in founding the first Masonic chapter in Vigo County, Lodge 19, chartered in 1821, and was the first Master. He was one of two contractors employed to build the first courthouse in the county. He served in the Indiana General Assembly.

Peter Buell Allen died 13 June 1833 in Terre Haute and was buried either on his own lands (now covered with buildings) or in the Indian Orchard Cemetery on the banks of the Wabash River. Some of the graves were later washed into the river - the remaining graves were moved to Woodlawn Cemetery in Terre Haute. Allen's grave was not among those noted as moved.

The Memorial stone placed in Woodlawn Cemetery near the grave of a grandson, was obtained through the joint efforts of Terre Haute Masonic Hodge 19 and a family member. The Lodge held a dedication ceremony, July 11, 2016.
