Ira Allen was the 2nd son born to Peter Buell Allen and Mary Peterson, Allen's Hill, Ontario County, New York. He came with his family to Terre Haute, Indiana about 1818.
Ira married Lydia Cargill, daughter of Nathan Cargill, 11 Jul 1819, Vigo County, Indiana. They can be found in the 1820 and 1830 censuses in Vigo County.
According to Beckwith's "History of Vigo County", Ira served one year in the Black Hawk War.
By 1840, Ira and Lydia had moved their family to Clay County, Indiana, and can be found in that county from 1840 - 1860.

There are four identified children:
Nathaniel, born 1822, died 1912, still living in Terre Haute.
Edward B., born 1832, died 1901, still living in Terre Haute.
Elvina (1850 census - difficult to read), or perhaps Almira C., born 1836 - She was really Louisa Caroline and even used the name Eliza at times.
Peter B. (named for his grandfather), b. 1841, d. 1896 in Terre Haute.

Ira died 11 Feb 1866 in Clay County. His burial site is at this time unknown. A brother's obituary stated that Ira had died in an accident. The widow Lydia was living back in Terre Haute in 1870, with her son Peter.
