George Outhwaite was born in England to John Outhwaite and Mary (Coates) Outhwaite. In 1830 The family left England for the USA when George was about 15, first living in Buffalo, New York. His mother died soon after, leaving the father with eight children. Then they moved to Cleveland, Ohio, where the father ran a candle and soap business. He was also active in the Methodist church. In Sept 1847, he married Mary Ann Pool, who was the daughter of Peter Pool and Susannah Leonard of Virginia. Mary Ann was born in Loudoun Co., Virginia, in 1819. Her father died when she was young and her mother remarried to Frederick W. Morris. Most of this family moved to Zanesville, Ohio, in the 1830s.
