Born in Johnston County on Sept. 19, 1935, he was the son of the late Simon Peter Barnes and the late Renda Elizabeth Hales Barnes. Reid is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Joan Pike Barnes.

Mr. Barnes was a veteran who served for 20 years in the U.S. Air Force. He was a longtime member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Rocky Mount, where is served as a Deacon.
