JUDGE JOSEPH PAYNE BURIED LAST SUNDAY
Our little city (Green River, WY)was stricken with grief on last Friday noon, when word was herald about the town that Judge Joseph Payne had dropped dead with heart disease. While the judge had not been feeling well for some time, yet none considered that his illness was alarming, and when it was learn¬ed that he had suddenly lapsed into the everlasting sleep a shadow passed over the town.
Uncle Joseph Payne was one of the best known men of the county, having resided in this county for the past fifty years, and his sudden demise is mourned by all who knew the venerable judge. He was a hunter of note, and when last year he gave up his favorite pastime of hunting bear and elk, his friends realized that he must be declining, for many a hunter throughout the county, well knows what an ardent nimrod, was the judge, and many interesting accounts could they relate as to his courage and expertness in dispatching big game.
For a number of years he has been Justice of the Peace of the Green River precinct and Town Police Judge, in which offices he made a splendid record, being always just in his verdicts and was endowed with that blessing of human kindness to¬ward mankind that will remain in the memory of all who knew him personally.
Joseph Payne, Sr. was born Feb¬ruary 24, 1838 in Kentucky. Married Miss Nancy Jane Muir November 23, 1856, in Louisanna (sic), MO. To this union four children were born--- John D., who died March 8, 1913, in South Pasadena, California, Joseph R. of American Fork, Utah; Jesse Anna, of Salem, Illinois; and Florence Rosella of the Philippine Islands. Mrs. Payne died May 23, 1909 in this city. He enlisted in Co. F, 3rd Regiment of Colorado Cavalry in 1864 and was honorably discharged in December of the same year.
The judge was of a kind, gentle nature, and he will be missed from the community by every, man, woman and child, who will long cherish in their memory the kind, venerable judge.
A sad feature of the funeral was the fact that only one child was able to be present, Joseph R. Payne of American Fork, Utah. Mrs. White, the oldest daughter being ill in Illinois, while Mrs. Aubry who resides in the Philippine Islands was unable to reach here in time for the funeral.
