Ruth grew up in Crane, the daughter of O.D. and Pearl (Jones) Peters, with four brothers. Only Owen of Springfield survives.
She found and married her true love, Frank Gammon, in 1946 and they remained loving, devoted, best friends until his death in 1988.
Ruth was a member of First Baptist Church in Springfield for 60 years, teaching Sunday School to two generations of young women.
She was an avid golfer, bridge player, gardener and later in life, world traveler.
Ruth was active in P.E.O., the Springfield Junior League, Art Group, the Boys and Girls Club, Bible Study Fellowship, and served as the last president of the Mary E. Wilson Home. She took pride in representing her family in several civic and cultural endeavors, and inspiring the young women she taught to be Godly wives. Ruth was an intelligent woman, a natural leader, a gracious hostess, a faithful friend, but always first and foremost, the beloved wife, helpmate, North Star, and life partner of Frank.
She was also preceded in death by her only daughter, Marylu Gammon Rife; one grandson, Scott Gammon; and one great-granddaughter, Maya McInturff.
She is survived by her sons, Joe and wife, Sandra; and Tim and wife, Jan Gammon; and son-in-law, Jamie Rife of Springfield, MO; other family members, including 16 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a host of kind and caring friends.
Visitation is Thursday at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Graveside services are at National Cemetery October 13. A praise memorial service at First Baptist Church of Springfield, October 13.
