Soon after his marriage he and his wife moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where he practiced medicine. In 1892 their only child, Brehon Somervell, was born. From 1896-1905 he served as principal of the Centennial Elementary School. In 1906 they moved to the District of Columbia where they opened Belcourt Seminary, a finishing school for young women.
