He was born on October 5 1918 at Scammon, Kansas to Orlando Edward and Ada (Garretson) Baker. He grew up near Scammon and attended country schools. He worked in a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp during the Great Depression. He later served in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater. He returned southeast Kansas following his honorable discharge.
He lived in Parsons while working for the Katy Railroad as a machinist. He also worked for Eby Construction and moved to the various job sites while with the company. Following his retirement from the Katy and Eby Wilbur worked in maintenance at the Katy Hospital and the Labette County Medical Center. He recently moved to Vilonia, Arkansas to live with his son.
He and Nellie M. Smith were married on April 25, 1955 at Iola, Kansas. She preceded him in death on April 27, 1987.
He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, and working on old trucks. He was affectionately known to his family as “Pops”.
Wilbur is survived by his son, Ed Baker, and his wife, Debi of Vilonia, AR; his daughter, Colleen Silvia, and her husband, Thomas of Webster, NY; seven grandchildren, Casey Baker, and his wife, Aimee; Kodi Muse, and her husband, Ben; Ethan Baker, and his wife, Kerrie; Bailey Reed, her husband, Ryan; Christopher Ingraham, and his wife, Lynn; Cathlynn Prowe and Thomas Ingraham; ten great-grandchildren, Amanda Baker, Christian Baker, Amber Baker, Alexis Baker, McKenzie Muse, Emileigh Muse, Kingsleigh Baker, Triple Baker Reed, Caitlin O’Brien, and Erin O’Brien; two great-great grandchildren, Dakota and Joseph; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by nine brothers, Thomas, Charles, Henry, Clyde, Claude, Wayne, Robert, Max, and Jim Bush, two sisters, Orlena Fuller and Gloria Mashburn; and one great granddaughter, Bethany Baker.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at the Carson-Wall Funeral Home with the Reverend Joe Hyde officiating. Burial will follow in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Brown-Bishop Post No 704 Veterans of Foreign Wars. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 a.m. Tuesday until service time.
