John E. Harker was born July 21, 1840 at Patterson, New Jersey. He moved with his parents to Chicago in the early 1840's, then later to Henry county, Illinois. He was a Private in the Civil War and served as an artilleryman in the 3rd Regiment, Illinois Battery, 1863-1865.
On December 24th, 1873, he married Miss Viella Sheriff in Geneseo, Henry, Illinois. They had three sons, two died in infancy (Johnny V. 1878-1883 and Charles 1886-1886). Their third son, Samual, was born in Nebraska and grew to manhood. He died in California.
The family moved to Los Angeles California in the Fall of 1911. John died in July 1915, and his wife Viella died Dec. 1933.
