Clara A. Smurl, 83, formerly of North Pennsylvania Avenue in Wilkes-Barre, died Saturday at the home of her daughter, Regina Furman, Kingston, with whom she resided. She was recently a patient at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital. Born in Wilkes-Barre, she was the daughter of the late James and Clara (Heller) Eckrote.
She attended Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, and resided in Wilkes-Barre most of her life. She resided in Kingston since 1994.
She was employed by Prestige Shoe Co., Wilkes-Barre, for more than 30 years. She was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Wilkes-Barre.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Smurl; son, James W. Smurl; daughters, Rita and Mary Jane Smurl.
Surviving, in addition to her daughter, Regina, are daughters, Claire Billings, Mountaintop; Catherine Cummings, New Brunswick, N.J.; Shirley Furman, Noxen; sister, Edna Corrigan, Dallas; 21 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services were held Monday from the H. Merritt Hughes Funeral Home, Inc., 451 N. Main St., Wilkes-Barre, with the Rev. Gary Jones, Pastor of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, Wilkes-Barre, officiating.
Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
There were no public calling hours.
