Irvin is my great-great-uncle.
John Irvin Curtis was born Friday, December 2, 1887 in Aurora, Utah to John Franklin Curtis and Sarah Elizabeth Broadhead.

He married Irene Natalie Orrock on June 6, 1917 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Irvin and Irene later divorced. Irvin married Ruth Esther Hansen Samuels on June 14, 1945 in Heber City, Utah. They remained happily married until his death.

He attended Brigham Young University and Utah State Agricultural College (now known as Utah State University), where he graduated with a degree. He then attended the Colorado State Agricultural College at Fort Collins, where he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1916.

Irvin practiced veterinary medicine in Richfield for twenty-three years. In 1938, he was appointed State Veterinarian. He retired in 1957 and served as a federal meat inspector until his death.

Irvin was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. he served a mission to the Northwestern States from June 23, 1909 to August 1912. While on this mission, he was a branch president under Melvin J. Ballard.

He later served as president of Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association in Aurora. He was ordained a High Priest on March 15, 1924 by Apostle Melvin J. Ballard. He served on the Sevier Stake High Council for twenty years.

Irvin was a lifelong member of the Republican Party, and was very active in Utah politics. He served as chairman of the Sevier County Republican Party. He also served on the Richfield City Council for several years.

In 1939, he moved to the Salt Lake Valley, where he lived for the next twenty years. From 1939 until 1945, he resided at 1115 South 400 East in the Liberty Wells neighborhood of Salt Lake City. From 1945 until his death, he resided at 875 East Sherman Avenue (1330 South) in the East Libery Park neighborhood of Salt Lake City.

On Saturday, October 10, 1959, at about 10:15 a.m., Irvin was driving home from the grocery store when his vehicle, which was traveling eastbound, collided in the intersection of 7th East and 13th South with a northbound vehicle. His car went 106 feet out of control after the impact, while the other vehicle skidded fifty-one feet and made a ninety-degree turn facing east. Total property damage was estimated at $1,635. Irvin was killed instantly. The other driver, a seventeen-year-old from Salt Lake City, survived.

Irvin left to cherish his memory: his wife, Ruth of Salt Lake City; daughter, Marydean (Alma) Magleby of Salt Lake City; John (Janis) Curtis of Bountiful; seven grandchildren; ten brothers and sisters, Lero (Hazel) Curtis of Aurora; Earl (Myrtle) Curtis of Richfield; Alva Curtis of South Salt Lake; Ruel (Zola) Curtis of Kearns; Kenneth (Relia) Curtis of East Millcreek; Ella Record of Salt Lake City; Mabel (Duane) Ence of Millcreek; Sadie Christensen of Mesa, Arizona; Verda (Vince) Willardson of National City, California; Lora (Earl) Watkins of Van Nuys, California.

Funeral services were held at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 13, 1959 in the Hawthorne Ward Chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints located at 806 East Roosevelt Avenue (1455 South) in Salt Lake City. A viewing was held on Tuesday, Otober 12, 1959 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary located at 260 East South Temple Street in Salt Lake City, and at the Church one hour prior to the services.
Irvin was laid to rest following the conclusion of the Funeral Services at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in East Millcreek.
