Curtis Washington Caldwell, most comonly known as Washington, was one of the most prominent pioneers of Castle Valley and Ashley Valley (Uintah County)having also been among the early residents of Sanpete county. Mr. Caldwell died at Emery Sunday night the 14th of February of complications resulting from influenza. He had spent some time visiting with his daughter, Mrs. Almira Brinkerhoff, who lives at Emery. His parents were Matthew Caldwell and Barzilla Guymon Caldwell.
Washington Caldwell was born seventy-seven years ago in Council Bluffs, Iowa. As a boy he came to Utah, settling first at Springville, then at Fountain Green, whence he moved to Huntington in the late 1870's, when that section was originally settled. He was an Indian war veteran in Sanpete county. He had spent the last two winters in Emery.
Mr. Caldwell was the father of eleven children, seven of whom survive: Mrs. Alonzo Brinkerhoff of Emery, Mrs. Ed Samuels, formerly Mrs. Loretta Fisher of Vernal, Pearl and Earl of Huntington, Irvin of Duchesne, Lorin and Alonzo of Altonah, also three brothers, John E. of Roosevelt, W. G. of Lapoint, and Thomas of St. George.
Burial was in the Huntington cemetery.
He is also the father of Darwin Lymon Caldwell buried in the Huntington Cemetery, Effa Bell Caldwell, buried in Dry Fork, Uintah, Utah and Alonzo Caldwell, buried in San Francisco, California.
