Ambrose Ray was born in Va. in 1740 He was a son of John Ray and Susan Vance. He married Elizabeth Holcombe around 1770 in Union County S C. She was the daughter of John Holcombe and Eleanor Smith. Ambrose acquired a three hundred acre land grant about 1775 from the King of England. Padgett's Creek Baptist Church and it's parsonage now stand on part of his land.
