Sterling H Brooks, applied for a Confederate Pension on 7 August, 1899. He was a farmer, 75 years old and lived in Leon County. War Department records show he was a First Lieutenant, Company F, 37th Alabama Infantry, Confederate States Army. He enlisted 12 November, 1862. He was captured 24 November 1863 at Chattanooga TN, and released on 12 June, 1865 at Johnson Island, Ohio. He also stated he had lived in Leon County for 25 years, he had two horses and a wagon valued at $65 and income of $25. In the last three years, he had sold $100 worth of cattle. He was indigent and unable to work.

On the 1900 Leon County Census, we find Sterling Brooks 86 years old living with his daughter Martha Brooks Hightower and her husband George. Also in the household was Sterling's grandson, Wiley Mansel.
