Franklin was the son of the late George and Celestea (Lessor) Bessette.

Franklin served for the U.S. Navy for 10 years, including service aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea during the Korean Conflict. He then served with the Vermont Army National Guard at Camp Johnson in Colchester for 20 years.

Franklin was married in Georgia on Jan. 5, 1990, to the former Esther Gaudette.

He was predeceased by three brothers and by two sisters,
