ORIGINAL NAME: Karl Vilhelm Ludvig of Sweden and Norway

Swedish prince. He belonged to the Bernadotte Dynasty as a Prince of Sweden and Duke of Sudermania (Södermanland), second son of King Gustaf V and Queen Viktoria, and became a famous author. He was also Prince of Norway until 1905. He was born at Tullgarn Palace and as an adult participated less than most royal princes in government ceremonies, preferring to live at Stenhammar Palace at quite a distance south of the Swedish capital of Stockholm. There, eventually, when not traveling extensively all over the world, he could find the peace and quiet to write over 60 well-known books as Prins Wilhelm, many of them accounts of his travels. The United States was beneficially introduced to many Swedish readers with "Amerika från estraden". He also produced several well-received documentary films. In an arrangement by the government, he married a grand duchess of the Imperial Family of Russia. Their marriage lasted from 1908 till 1914 and produced one son before he was divorced by a princess very unimpressed with his family. He supported his son, who initially remained in Sweden, even after the latter was driven into exile by media bullying because of a "low" marriage. At Stenhammar, where he died, he had had an affair for many years with a French actress, ending when she was killed near the palace in an automobile accident in 1952.
