John D Burlend was born 21 December 1783 in Horsforth, Yorkshire, England to Edward and Mary (Marsden) Burland. On 2 December 1811 in Guiseley, Yorkshire, England, he married Rebecca Burton. In September 1831, John and his family, except for his eldest son and daughter, boarded the ship called “Home” in Liverpool, England to sail to America. They arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana in early November 1831. They would make their way up the Mississippi River and the Illinois River landing in Pike Co., Illinois. They settled near Detroit, Pike Co., Illinois. To John and Rebecca were born 14 children: Edward Burton, Mary Hall, Maria, Jane, Anne, John, Hannah, Stephen, Charlotte, Sarah, Harriet, William and two unnamed children. John was a farmer. He died 4 April 1871 in Pike Co., Illinois. He is buried in Bethel Cemetery, Newburg, Pike Co., Illinois.
