Married Mary J. Murdock on Dec. 23, 1858. According to muster rolls, John Bostwick was described as 27 years old at the time of enlistment (July 15, 1862), 5'6 1/2" tall with dark hair and blue eyes, and working as a farmer. He was mustered into Co. E of the 73rd Illinois Infantry and tranferred to Co. C on Sept. 13, 1862. He was discharged from service on May 27, 1864 on account of wounds received on Sept. 20, 1863.
