Mrs. Hester Callahan Broughton, 91 of 1030 Park Avenue Extension died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at her home.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Ebenezer ARP Church with the Rev. Barry Eller officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-7:30 tonight at the home.
Born in Anderson County, Mrs. Broughton was a graduate of Honea Path High School and Winthrop College. She worked at the Alumnae Office and the President's Office at Winthrop, where she was employed for 44 years until retiring in 1973.
She married the late Sam Fewell Broughton in 1938. She was a volunteer for and served two years as president of the York County Mental Health Association and served on their board for several years. Mrs. Broughton was a volunteer for American Red Cross. During World War II Mrs. Broughton taught life-saving classes for the Red Cross and was awarded a 25-year Pen for service in the Bloodmobile division. She was a member of the Rock Hill Planning Commission for 13 years and a volunteer for York County Hospice.
Mrs. Broughton was a member of Ebenezer ARP Church, where she taught Youth and Adult Sunday School. She was president of the Women of the Church on three separate occasions, Bible Study leader for Circles, Circle Chairman and treasurer of the Women of the Church. In 1981 she was presented a Life Membership in the Women of the Presbyterian Church.
She was a member of the Saluda Psychological Center board serving two six-year terms and serving one year as chairman. She was a member of the Rock Hill Business and Professional Women's Club since 1931 and has been president on three separate occasions. She served as president of the SC Federation of BPW Clubs.
Mr. and Mrs. Broughton were financial supporters for Maryville College in Tennessee, Winthrop University, Erskine College, Presbyterian College, Warren Wilson College, Columbia Seminary, and Montreat Conference Center. She was a member and treasurer of the Rock Hill Women's Club and served as vice president on two separate two-year terms, and in 1983 she was awarded a Life Membership.
Mrs. Broughton is survived by her son, Sam F. Broughton, Jr. of Florence, SC; one daughter, Sarah (Sally) H. Broughton Ives of Asheville, NC; three grandchildren; and one sister, Thelma Callahan Kirven of Columbia, SC.
