HUMPHREY — Richard “Dick” Ternus, 90, of Humphrey, died Thursday, March 3, 2016.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey with Fr. Joe Hemmer, OFM, and Fr. Patrick A. McLaughlin officiating. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, with a 4 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. Scripture service, and 9-10 a.m. Tuesday, all at the church. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery. A military graveside ceremony will be conducted by the Humphrey American Legion and VFW posts.

Dick was born May 9, 1925, near Humphrey, the son of Frank and Christina (German) Ternus. He attended grade school at St. Francis School and graduated from Humphrey High School, then served in the U.S. Navy from Feb. 12, 1951, to May 14, 1954.

On Nov. 22, 1956, Dick and Erna M. Hemmer were united in marriage at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cornlea. A lifetime resident, he farmed northeast of Humphrey on the homesteaded Ternus family farm and received a 100-year AKSARBEN Farm Award. His enjoyment and hobbies included crossword puzzles, sudoku, playing cards, reading, planting trees, photography, dancing to polka music, traveling to all 50 states and abroad, and being an avid Husker fan. He was a member of the Humphrey American Legion and VFW posts and served on the Humphrey Township Board.

Surviving are his wife, Erna of Humphrey; children and spouses, Gwen and Richard Steiner of Columbus, Paul of Humphrey, Becky and Mark Scott of Belgrade, Mark of Schuyler and Glenn and Joyce of Madison; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Louise Ternus of Perham, Minnesota.

Preceding in death were his parents, Frank and Christina; stepmother, Gertrude Ternus; son, Gregory; daughter, Margie; daughter-in-law, Susan Ternus; siblings and spouses, George and Ella Ternus, Joseph and Katherine Ternus, Eleanor and Stanley Garb, Art and Evelyn Ternus, Cecilia and Ed Ramaekers, Jerome and Virginia Ternus, Gene and Rhoda Ternus, Lawrence Ternus and Mary Ann and Joseph Ramaekers; and two infant siblings.

Arrangements are with Duesman Funeral Chapel of Humphrey.
