Major Richard D. Clark was an Infantry Unit Commander. He was killed in action by small arms fire near Phuoc Vinh, South Vietnam, in the battle with the elite Phu Loi Battalion.

During the nine-day operation, the battle casualties were high on both sides. The Americans suffered 41 killed, 34 on 25 August, the day Major Clark lost his life.
