May 15, 1920 — March 24, 2008
Jim Durkheimer was born and raised in Portland where he graduated from Lincoln High School before attending University of Oregon. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II and was stationed primarily in France. Upon returning from the War, Jim began his career as the third generation in the family's wholesale grocery and beverage distribution business, Wadhams & Co. He worked at Wadhams until the sale of the company in 1976. Jim loved the beach and the sea. He spent most of his summers as a youth at the family house in Seaview, Wash., on the Long Beach Peninsula. As an adult, he was happiest while captaining his boat the "Klick-Tat-Too." He enjoyed time with his wife Rita and their many friends and family aboard the boat and at their beach house in Seaview. Jim was most proud of his involvement with Loaves & Fishes where he delivered Meals-on-Wheels for over 20 years and served on the organization's board of directors. He also was an active volunteer with the Boy Scouts serving as an assistant scout master with Riverdale Troop 110. He stayed in great physical shape his entire life, exercising regularly with the early birds at the Multnomah Club for over 50 years. He never stopped exercising and would go from Terwilliger Plaza to the Duniway track for his mile walk nearly every day. Jim is survived by his wife of 33 years, Rita; brother, Stuart; sisters, Eloise Spiegel and Marion Jaffe; his former wife, Shirley Tams; Jim's children, Jim Maer (Daru), John Durkheimer (Karen), Anne Gunderson (Bob); Rita's children, Bruce Halperin (Connie) and Liz Halperin; and his seven grandchildren, Jennifer, Katie, Rob, Michael, Alec, Rian and Devon. A family service will be held. Memorial contributions may be made to Loaves and Fishes, P.O. Box 19477, Portland OR 97280.
