John Edwin Banks, Sr.
January 10, 1923 - March 26, 2014

John Edwin Banks, Sr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 26, 2014 at the age of 91.

Born in San Antonio on January 10, 1923, he graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and the University of Texas in Austin where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity.

After serving his country in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific during World War II, he obtained his MBA while working on Wall Street for Irving Trust Company. He completed his education with a LLB from SMU School of Law, where he was an editor of the Southwest Law Journal.

While in Dallas, he met Jacqueline Gentry and they married on April 15, 1950. John and Jac moved to San Antonio in 1952 where John practiced law for more than 50 years.

He worked as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas from 1955-1959, served as United States Commissioner from 1959 to 1963, and practiced law with his family's law firm, Banks and Banks. John was President of the San Antonio Bar Association in 1966-1967 and elected as a director of the State Bar of Texas from 1969-1972. He served on the board as well as President of the San Antonio Area Foundation and the Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital. Other board positions included the San Antonio Country Club and the Argyle. He was a member of Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, the Alamo Kiwanis Club, the Conopus Club, Club Giraud, the German Club and the Texas Cavaliers.

John loved to travel with Jac and to play golf and when the two intersected, he was most happy. He shared his interest in history and love of learning with his children on annual family vacations and relished family get-togethers, presiding over and teasing his grandchildren who knew him as "Big John".

He was preceded in death by his parents C. Stanley Banks, Sr. and Anne Sutcliffe Banks, his brother, C. Stanley Banks, Jr, and his sister, Eleanor Banks Donnelly.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jac, and by his children: John E. Banks, Jr. and wife, Marcella; Blair Banks Perry; his sister, Mary Jo Banks Klingeman; and sister-in-law, Earlene Gentry. He is also survived by his grandchildren: John III and Emory Banks; Paige and Peyton Perry; as well as cousins Lila Banks Cockrell and John L. Hendry; nieces, nephews and extended family. The family would like to give special thanks to Mary Hernandez for her wonderful care and assistance. Arrangements at Alamo Heights United Methodist Church, 825 E. Basse Rd., San Antonio, TX are pending.
