Early Life: Keith was born on January 7, 1914, to Harry Thomas Walter and Lottie Marie Andersen Oakes at Hyrum, Utah. He spent his early years in La Jolla and San Diego, California.
Life's Work/Service/Interests: On July 21, 1947, he married Carol Emeline O'Driscoll in the Logan Utah Temple. He served a mission to the Central States Mission. He earned a bachelor's degree from Utah State Agricultural College then taught history at East High School. Keith served in the United States Air Force in General McArthur's Headquarters from Australia to the Philippines and was later assigned to the headquarters of the 5th Air Force in the occupation of Japan. After obtaining a master's degree from Utah State, Keith and Carol moved to southern California where he received his Doctoral Degree from the University of Southern California. He held professorships twice at Utah State and at USC. In 1957, Keith joined the faculty at Brigham Young University. He served as Chair of the Departments of Educational Philosophy, Education Administration, the Graduate Department of Education, Dean of Summer School, as a member of the University Administrative Council, Chair of the Study Abroad Committee and as a consultant to the Division of Continuing Education with specific assignments to the Jerusalem Center and Travel Study. He served on the Pacific Board of Education, the Polynesian Cultural Center Board and was appointed as the Assistant Administrator of Church Schools comprised of all Church Education systems outside the United States. As an active member of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in bishoprics, a stake presidency, as bishop of the Pleasant View 5th Ward, president of the New Zealand Christchurch Mission with his wife, and in Israel. Church committees on which he served included the Deseret Sunday School union board, Church reading committee, Lamanite committee, Church servicemen's committee, adult curriculum committee, adult committee of the Church correlation program and the meetinghouse library committee. He will be remembered for his kindness, humor, love of music, and his dedication to his family and church. Keith Ronald Oakes passed away at his home on November 28, 2000, in Provo, Utah. He was 86.
Survived By: His wife, Carol, of Provo; four children: Christine Emeline, Provo; Cynthia Puszkiewicz (David), Chicago, Illinois; Marcie McBride (Rick), Springville; Gregory K. (LuAnn), Kaysville; eight grandchildren; sister, Elaine Morton, Ogden; brother, Alden A. Oakes, St. George; sister, Laurel Scholes, Santa Rosa, California.
