William Russell "Russ" Gard, 90, of West Lafayette, died at 7:53 AM Tuesday, March 23, 2004, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, shortly after admission. Born Oct. 25, 1913, in White County, he attended Wea High School and lived in Tippecanoe County most of his life. He married Mary Jennie Newton on July 6, 1956, in Cumberland; she died April 31, 1990.

Mr. Gard worked at Purdue University physical plant and as a turbine operator for 20 years, retiring in 1978. He had previously worked for Burlington Railroad. He served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of West Lafayette Christian Church and American Legion Post 492 in West Lafayette.

Surviving is a sister, Ethel Kerkhoff of Phelps, WI; also 5 step-grandchildren, 11 step-great-grandchildren, and 10 step-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
