Gene Leslie Martin went peacefully to his heavenly home on February 24th, 2016.
He was born May 16th, 1930, to Lorin and Emma (Hoefs) Martin. He spent his boyhood on area farms and graduated from Beemer High School in 1947. He was active in American Legion baseball in high school and played in West Point and later on the town team for Wisner.
Gene attended Wayne State College before entering the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Korean War between 1949 and 1953, when he was honorably discharged.
Gene married Irene Ehrisman on May 26th 1957, and to this blessed union was born 12 children, 32 grandchildren, and, at current count, 10 great-grandchildren.
Gene was the Postmaster for Beemer for over 25 years. He also held many part-time jobs including painting, cemetery caretaking and grave-digging. He was active in his church and in the Beemer community all of his life. With the support of the American Legion, he started a baseball program for Beemer boys and coached with this program for many years.
Gene especially enjoyed gardening and traveling with his wife Irene, as well as bible study and other church activities. He was also an avid stamp collector and very proud of his collection. He and Irene have also enjoyed many years of watching their children and grandchildren in sports and other school activities. He enjoyed raising the flag for the GACC football games and took pride in honoring veterans by placing flags in the cemetery for Memorial Day. Gene had a serving heart and volunteered his time and energy in countless ways.
