"Funeral services for Gene L. Martin age 85 of Beemer, NE will be held on Monday, February 29, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Beemer Mennonite Church in Beemer, NE. Interment with military rites will be in the Beemer Cemetery. There will be a luncheon following the committal at the Beemer American Legion Hall. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a Prayer Service at 7:30 p.m., at the Beemer Mennonite Church. The arrangements are under the care and direction of the Minnick Funeral Home in West Point, NE.

Gene Leslie Martin went peacefully to his heavenly home on February 24th, 2016.

He was born May 16th, 1930, to Lorin and Emma (Hoefs) Martin. He spent his boyhood on area farms and graduated from Beemer High School in 1947. He was active in American Legion baseball in high school and played in West Point and later on the town team for Wisner.

Gene attended Wayne State College before entering the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Korean War between 1949 and 1953, when he was honorably discharged.

Gene married Irene Ehrisman on May 26th 1957, and to this blessed union was born 12 children, 32 grandchildren, and, at current count, 10 great-grandchildren.

Gene was the Postmaster for Beemer for over 25 years. He also held many part-time jobs including painting, cemetery caretaking and grave-digging. He was active in his church and in the Beemer community all of his life. With the support of the American Legion, he started a baseball program for Beemer boys and coached with this program for many years.

Gene especially enjoyed gardening and traveling with his wife Irene, as well as bible study and other church activities. He was also an avid stamp collector and very proud of his collection. He and Irene have also enjoyed many years of watching their children and grandchildren in sports and other school activities. He enjoyed raising the flag for the GACC football games and took pride in honoring veterans by placing flags in the cemetery for Memorial Day. Gene had a serving heart and volunteered his time and energy in countless ways.

Gene is survived by his wife of 58 years, Irene, and also his children: Lisa Van Ert (husband Gary) of Lincoln, NE and children Erin Simanic (husband Mladen, son Maksim), Leslie DeLong (husband AJ), and Elizabeth and Emilia Van Ert; Lori Krogman (husband Mark) of Southlake, Texas and son Adam Hass (wife Cortney, sons Aidan and Isaac); Tom Martin (wife Sherie) of Genessee, Idaho, and children Jake and Teo); Terry Martin (wife Kathy) of Beemer, NE and children Jeremy (wife Jackie, children Eva, Ella and Emma), Lynn Liermann (husband Bret, children Damon, Derek), and Tony; Tim Martin (partner Jack McMorrow) of New York City, New York; Gina VanCeylon (husband Chris) of McKinney, Texas and children Jarron and Madeleine); Geri Schantz (husband Brian) of Laurel, NE and children Sadie Ebberson (husband Jeff, children Graham and Theo), sons Eli and Ezra; Julie Hass (husband Brian) of West Point, NE and children, Nate, Blake, Tanner, Mitchell, Noah, Sophia, Isabel and Samuel; Kristen Martin of Pauling, New York and daughters Harper and Addison; Dan Martin (wife Brenda) of Howells, NE and children Braden, Andre, and Gabe; Trisha Lage (husband Mark) of Nutley, New Jersey and son Charlie; Jonathan Martin (wife Lexi) of Pauling, New York and children Zach, Elsie and Emma.

Gene was preceded in his passing by his parents, and survived by his brother Dr. Ben Martin (wife Ginger), sister Marion Dennis (husband Warren), sister Susie Cohee (husband Bill), brother Denny Martin (wife Julie), and sister Gayle Holtz (husband Norbert), and many nieces, nephews and other family members.

Through his humble spirit and kind heart, Gene impacted many people throughout his life. He will be greatly missed."
