Obituary (from the Woodward, Iowa, Enterprise, preserved by his daughter, Eldora Nance Thomas)
Lewis Melville Nance was born in Franklin, Green county, Kentucky, May 8th, 1827. When he was four years of age, his parents moved to Menard county, Illinois. In March 1855, he was married and came farther west and settled in Boone county, Iowa, in August of the same year. He spent most of his life on a farm between Woodward and Boone. He was well known about Woodward and for the last eight years has lived among us. His familiar figure and hearty greetings are greatly missed by all. Father Nance had been troubled several years with heart failure and his death was sudden and painless. He had arisen early Sunday morning, May 29th and partially dressed himself when the fatal attack came and he was gone with hardly a struggle. His sudden death was a great shock to his wife and the children. The youngest daughter, Laura, was in Oberlin, Ohio, attending school and was telegraphed in time so she could be present at the funeral. Two daughters, Mrs. Wm. Storms and Mrs. G. Thomas, live in Woodward, while the son, Thomas, lives in Madrid. The funeral services were held in the M.E. church Tuesday, May 31st, and was attended by a large concourse of sorrowing neighbors and friends. The body was laid to rest in the Woodward cemetery. Father Nance was an earnest christian, having joined the Presbyterian church in 1881. When the family moved to Woodward they connected themselves with the M.E. church. We all miss him but are consoled in the thought that he is gone --
Out of the shadows of sadness,
Into the sunshine of gladness,
Into the land of the blest;
Out of a land very dreary,
Out of the world of the weary,
Into the rapture of rest.
