In 1870 Otway lived in Long Bar Township,Yuba County with his family, the census states he was a farmer. Then in 1880 he was in Marysville City working as a laborer. When Otway died his obit stated he was living on a pear orchard with three of his sons, just south of the Yuba River.
At the time of his death he left a wife, Elizabeth who was from Missouri and six children. Two of his adult sons, Stonewall and Willis are also buried in the Marysville cemetery.
