Sonny was a lifelong resident of Pemberton Borough and was a 1956 graduate of Pemberton High School, where he was an accomplished athlete. He received an athletic scholarship to Campbell University, where he received his associate degree and then transferred to Trenton State College where he received his Bachelor's degree.
Sonny served proudly in the early 60s in the United States Army in Germany and received the Army Occupational Medal and Good Conduct Medal.
He was a retired teacher for the Pemberton Twp. Schools, where he taught 5th and 6th grades at Emmons, Busansky, Fort Dix Elementary and retired at Newcomb after 29 years.
Sonny was a member of the Eden-Stanley American Legion Post #294, Pemberton, where he was a former treasurer. He also was a member of the NJEA.
He played on the local Pemberton Adult Baseball League with many great friends.
He loved gardening, fishing, golf and the Philadelphia sports teams.
He is survived by his love, Mavis (Truett), and was the beloved father of Richard Hutchins and wife, Cheryl, Joseph Wayne Hutchins and wife, Gloria, the late Michael Hutchins, and Marisa R. Phillips and husband, Timothy; and dear brother of Jean Bauman, Pat Brown and Thelma Jones. He is also survived by his many grandchildren and by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends of Sonny's family are invited to a chapel service at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at the BGWCD Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel, 350 Provinceline Road, Arneytown, North Hanover Twp. Friends and family are invited to celebrate and share fond memories of Sonny's life at the American Legion Post #294 starting at 2 p.m., Tuesday afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eden-Stanley American Legion Post #294, Pemberton, or Deborah Heart & Lung Center, Browns Mills, NJ 08015.
