A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Merle worked for many years as commissary officer at Fort Dix.
He was a longtime member of the Pemberton United Methodist Church, where he served as a former lay leader. Merle also was a member of the Pemberton Lodge 199 of the Free and Accepted Masons, and an avid golfer.
Husband of the late Angelyn Challender; and father of the late Roselyn Challender, he is survived by three sons, Robert Jr. and Lisa Challender of Hainesport; Chris H. and Cindy Challender of Greenville, N.C., and Jeffrey Challender of California; four grandchildren, Danielle, Brian, Laura and Casey; four siblings, Raymond Challender Jr., Jeanne Bauman, Thelma Jones, and Pat Brown of Florida.
His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, at the Pemberton United Methodist Church, 45 Hanover St., Pemberton, NJ 08068, where relatives and friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will follow the service in the Jacobstown Baptist Cemetery.
