Mrs. Emily Grotts Was One of Memphis’ Oldest Residents

Mrs. Emily Hewitt-Grotts, one of Memphis’ oldest residents, died Sunday morning, January 21, at 12:15, at the home in Memphis where she had lived almost continuously since 1879.

Mrs. Grotts was among the oldest residents of Memphis, having lived here all her life, except a few years after her marriage to Mr. Grotts, when she lived in Quincy.

The home she owned was at the corner of South Market and Huntington Streets, purchased in 1879, from the late H. G. Pitkin.

Her only child, Dr. Harry Hewitt, dentist, of Downing, died several years ago. She is survived by four grandchildren.

Mrs. Grotts was the daughter of Richard and Ollie Power. She was born in Scotland County on April 27, 1851, being almost 89 years of age.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. M. Feay at the Gerth & Baskett funeral parlor Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock. Interment was in the Hickory Grove Cemetery west of Arbela.

She was married in Memphis to Thomas Hewitt, who died over forty years ago. She was later married to Oran Grotts.

Her son died on April 13, 1934. The surviving grandchildren are Clifton, Francis, and Robert Hewitt and Mrs. June Larson, all of Chicago.

She was a member of the Christian Church at Arbela.
