Israel Dodge Allphin and wife, Burnetta, with seven children went to Texas from Illinois in 1852. They joined the church and traveled by ox team to Salt Lake Valley arriving in the fall of 1857.

They were called to settle Utah's Dixie, and were the first to settle in Pine Valley. A few years later they moved to the Royal Hunt Ranch that lies in a box canyon near Central above Santa Clara.

While living there a foot wall of water down the canyon sweeping everything away in its wake. It picked up the farm house with the family inside, careened it down the canyon killing four of the children. Mrs. Allphin and a young daughter, Sarah, were washed up on a hillside where Israel rescued them.

They moved back to Pine Valley where Sarah met and married John Mathis Thomas. She was about 16; he was nineteen.

About 1895 they come to the Muddy Valley and lived at the Weiser Ranch on the Old Spanish Trail. Sarah had occasion to help many travelers on their way.

Though she has spent the greatest part of her life on the frontier and has gone through Indian uprisings, hardships, and sorrows, she was still active at the age of 83 and was willing to acknowledge the hand of God in all the things she has done.
