Residence Botetourt County VA; a 20 year-old Farmer; 5'4", dark complexion, blue eyes, brown hair.
Enlisted on 5/15/1861 in Botetourt County, VA., he traveled 50 miles to Lynchburg, VA., where on 5/16/1861 he was mustered into Captain William T. Patton's Company, 28th Virginia Infantry, as a Private. (This company subsequently became Company A, 28th Virginia Infantry.)
Absent, sick at home on Nov & Dec 1861 and Jan & Feb 1862 Rolls; Sick Furlough given 11/4/1861.
Present on March & April 1862 Roll.
Wounded In Action (chest); captured 3 Colonels and Yankee colors 6/30/1862 in Battle of Gaines Mill, VA.
Wounded In Action (chest) 8/30/1862 in Battle of 2nd Manassas.

An epitome of the Blue Ridge Rifles, or Company A, 28th Regiment, Virginia Volunteer Infantry written by J. K. Simmons (1840-1927). Includes a short history of Company A (Blue Ridge Rifles), 28th Virginia Infantry, written by J. K. Simmons, who served as first sergeant of the company. The history contains information on the company's organization and participation in the Civil War, including names of soldiers wounded, killed, captured, and surrendered. Includes a handwritten copy of the history and a typescript compiled by J.D. Tual of Sikestown, Missouri. In addition to the history, this collection contains a speech Simmons gave presenting the company's drum to the Fincastle Chapter of the U.D.C., a photograph of Simmons, and a photograph of Simmons and his brothers taken in June 1912. 7 pages of Typewritten transcription of the reminiscences of J.K. Simmons (1840-1927) of Botetourt County, Virginia, concerning his time as a Confederate prisoner of war, and his confinement at Frederick City, Maryland, Philadelphia, Fort Delaware, and Point Lookout, Maryland. On 2/11/1886, he successfully applied for Confederate Disability due to his war wounds, especially since the hip/buttock wound was crippling.

The 28th Virginia Infantry Regiment completed its organization at Lynchburg, Virginia, in June, 1861. Its members were raised in the counties of Botetourt, Craig, Bedford, Campbell, and Roanoke.
While with the Army of Northern Virginia, the 28th fought in most of major battles in the east, including: 1st and 2nd Manassas, the Seven Day's battles, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, the Siege of Richmond and Petersburg and the retreat to Appomattox.
