Matthäus (called Math, Matthew or Matt) was the third of eight children of Johannes Anhorn and his second wife Christina Stadel, immigrants from Beresina, Bessarabia (South Russia), where Matthew was born. His gravestone incorrectly names his birth year - he was born 28 Dec. 1885 and christened the next day in Beresina, Akkerman, Bessarabia. He was named after a half sibling who had been born 5 Jan. 1880 and who died 27 April the same year, a son of his father's first wife, Anna Maria Rothacker (1849-1880).

At age 9, Matt immigrated with his family via Bremen on the ship Spree to Ellis Island, NY, arriving on 12 April 1894. The family immediately migrated to North Dakota, where they homesteaded in Wells and Manfred counties.

On Dec. 15, 1907, Matt married Amelia Hannemann (1887-1958) in Wells County ND. The couple raised three daughter : Alvina Alda, Elda Romilda, and Gertrude. Matt raised grain and cattle and owned a threshing rig in Forward and Rusland Townships. He hired 23 men to run the rig and 2 women as cooks. They traveled from farm to farm for the work. Matt loved horses and horse trading was his hobby.
