Johannes was the first of eight children of Johannes Anton Anhorn and his second wife, Christina Stadel 1857-1918). Their first 6 children were born in Beresina, Bessarabia (South Russia). The family emigrated in 1894, arriving at Ellis Island on 12 April that year on the ship Spree. One son had died before the emigration.

In Feb. 1904 in Harvey, ND, Johannes married Julianna Hager, also born in Beresina. The couple had two sons: John Joseph Jr. (1904-1927) and Martin Adam (1906-1997). They also fostered a "train orphan" from New York City, Frances Kathryn Parmley (1910-1997) and raised Julianna's nephew Albert Jacob Hager (1930-1972), whose parents died when he was very young; Alfred later bore the last name Anhorn.
