Thomas D. Barnhart of Pendleton passed away Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at St. Anthony Hospital, with family members present. He was 89 years old.

He was born to Lewis and Lucy Barnhart on December 24, 1923, in Ketchum, Oklahoma. He attended school in Jay, Oklahoma and graduated high school. He attended an engineering school on heavy equipment in Chicago, Illinois.

Tom served in World War II in the African and European campaigns. He served as a tank driver in the 191st Company B tank battalion that served in northern Africa, Anzio, Italy, France and finally in Germany. He was wounded on two different occasions but served to the end of the war and was honorably discharged.

When he returned he married Regina Pearce of Jay, Oklahoma. They started a family in Oklahoma then moved to Oregon in the 1950's settling in the Roseburg valley.

He served in the CCC camps in the Colorado area building a number of public projects including parks. Once in Oregon he got on constructing power lines for a company that eventually became Pacific Power & Light. He spent his career operating heavy equipment like cats, loaders and belly dumps working on construction projects throughout Oregon. He worked on dam projects at Blue River and North Powder, and worked on the construction of the I-84 interstate freeway from Biggs to Huntington, Highway 97, and Mt. Hood highway. He retired from construction in the late 1970's.

Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading old western books and history, watching his grandchildren's baseball games and school events, taking drives to areas, joking with family, building and planting and taking care of his garden, and giving family members fruits and vegetables from his garden.

A graveside for the family will be held on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton, Oregon. Donations are requested to be made to Wounded Warriors.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lucy Barnhart, his father,Lewis Barnhart and his wife Regina Barnhart. He is survived by his daughter Brenda of Pendleton, his son-in-law Del of Pendleton, his son Tony Barnhart of Pendleton, his daughter-in-law Marla Barnhart of Pendleton, five grandchildren, Sheehan Barnhart of Corvallis, OR., Chris Barnhart of Sacramento, CA., Keegan Purcell of North Carolina, Tara Perkins of Mukilteo, WA., Piper Malicke of Portland, OR., and four great-grandchildren.
