Brother of Captain John Joseph Fray of the 34th Virginia Infantry.
Postwar, he was a clerk with merchants Wait & Miller Co., in 1867. Having married Emma Roberts Miller in 1872, he purchased the company in 1880 and started Fray & Co.

Company A, 7th Virginia Infantry, Kemper's Brigade, Pickett's Division, 1st Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, C.S.A.

Residence Culpeper, VA.; 5' 9.0", dark complexion, hazel eyes, auburn hair; 18 year-old student.
Enlisted on 4/25/1861 at Madison Court House, VA. for 12 months' service, he traveled 25 miles to Culpeper Court House where he was mustered 5/13/1861 into Captain John Welch's Company, 7th Virginia Infantry as a Private. This company was later redesignated Company A.
Absent, sick June 30, 1861 Roll.
Present on all rolls thru Sept & Oct 1863 Roll.
Detailed on Provost duty Nov & Dec 1863 Roll.
Present on all succeeding rolls until POW 4/6/1865 Harper's farm, Sailor's Creek, VA.; confined 4/13/1865 Point Lookout, MD.; Oath Allegiance, released 6/12/1865.

The 7th Infantry Regiment was organized in May, 1861, at Manassas Junction, Virginia, with men from Giles, Madison, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Greene, and Albemarle counties.
