Brother of Pvt William Henry Fray of the 7th Virginia Infantry.
Postwar he married his first cousin, Sarah Elizabeth Wayland on 12/23/1868 in Madison County, VA. Their former home in Madison County has been restored and now serves as the Madison County Library. Later moved to Raleigh, North Carolina where he was Principal of the Raleigh Male Academy and President of the North America Teachers Assembly.

Residence Madison County, VA.; 21 years old.
Enlisted April 1861 for 12 months service, he was mustered into Captain George Bouton's Company, Madison Artillery.
Commissioned 7/1/1861 as 2nd Lieutenant.
Promoted 5/21/1862 to Captain, Commanding, Captain Fray's Company.
Company was reorganized 5/23/1862 as Company C, VA 34th Infantry.
Company disbanded 7/14/1862.
Applied 10/27/1862 for clerk, Dept. of C.S.A. Treasury.
Applied 10/31/1862 for position in Military Courts, Secretary of War.
Enlisted 10/5/1863 in Fauquier County for the duration of the war, he was mustered into Colonel Mosby's 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry, Partisan Rangers.

The 34th Infantry Regiment was organized in May, 1862, with men from Norfolk, Richmond, and Yorktown, and the counties of Gloucester, Mecklenburg, Bedford, Greene, and King and Queen. For almost two years the unit served as heavy artillery attached to the Department of Richmond and was known as the 4th Heavy Artillery.

Principal Raleigh Male Academy. President North America Teachers Assembly. One of the foremost and most successful educators in the state. Universally beloved in life and universally mourned in death.

His many virtues form the noblest monument to his memory.
