Virginia Barker, 77 year old Woodward resident died Tuesday, February 2, 2016 in Woodward. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, February 6, 2016 in the First Baptist Church interment will follow in the Debolt Cemetery in Arnett. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home.
Virginia Gayle (Roper) Barker was born on January 29, 1939 in Shattuck, Oklahoma the daughter of Fred Lloyd and Eva Lucille (Franklin) Roper. Virginia was reared on a dairy farm 5 ½ miles North of Arnett. She attended school in Arnett and graduated from Arnett High School. Virginia then enrolled in Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee. She spent the next twenty years in the Oklahoma City area, where she worked for various business as a data processor. Virginia then settled in Woodward, and began working for the Oklahoma Employment Service, retiring in 2001. She was united in marriage to Willie “Bill” Lee Barker in the First Baptist Church in Woodward on January 19, 1991. Virginia and Bill made their home in Woodward.
Virginia enjoyed music, reading, her flower garden, but especially enjoyed her children and grandchildren. She and Bill loved walking on the Walking Trail.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church, where she loved singing the choir.
Virginia is survived by her husband Bill of the home; daughter, Dawn Smith of Amarillo, Texas two sons, Gary Smith of Fort Worth, Texas; and Mark Smith of Oklahoma City; step-daughter, Lesa Ann Weller and husband Kenny of Groom, Texas; step-sons, Kevin Barker and wife Paula of Forth Worth, Texas; Stanley Barker and wife Sondra of Mooreland; one sister, Jean Barnett of Arnett; one brother; David Roper and wife Jeanne of Blacksburg, Virginia; eight grandchildren, Madison Joy Smith; Tyler William Smith; Brandon Barker; Kayla Barker; Garet Dade; Katelyn Thompson; great-granddaughter, Aleah Marie; several other family members and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Kenneth Roper; sister, Marjorie Wieden; brother-in-law, Jack Barnett; sister-in-law, Thelma Roper.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation for Heart research with the funeral home accepting the contributions on behalf of the family.
