Gilliland, M. Joan (Beck) 82 of Altoona died February 1, 2016 at UPMC Altoona. Born January 20, 1934 in Gallitzin the daughter of the late Fred J. Sr. and Mary Carolyn (Sheridan) Beck.

Preceded in death by sisters, Leanne Bender and Peggy and brothers Fred J. Jr. , Philip and Thomas.

Survived by children: Kay Canham – Gordonsville, VA; Karen Messina – Randolph, NJ; Neil (Laurie) Travelers Rest, SC; Amy (Stephen) Becker – Altoona; P. Joseph (Pennie) – Strasburg, VA. Grandchildren; Stacey Frechette, Joseph Canham, Paul, Seana and Christopher Messina, Tara Carter, Amber Wyatt, Chenoa Wyatt, Allan Becker, Tabitha Arbogast and Erin Gilliland, great grandchildren, Dakota, Chloe, Bronwyn, Justin, Aiden, Jadyn, Lawton “Tre”, Elijah, Xzavious, Eden, Joshua, Alanna, Dylan and Lexi.

Sister of Dr. Donna Marie Beck CSJ – Baden, Dr. Carolyn (Bob) Nickerson – Cresson, and Maureen (Thomas) Potyraj – Catonsville, MD.

She liked her cat Puss Puss. Joan served in the Women’s Army Corp. She worked as a Property Manager for Coverstone IV Apts. In Manassas, VA. She taught music, a member of a jazz band “Starliters”, played piano and key board, like to read, doing crossword puzzles, traveling, swimming and especially her family.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 pm followed by a Funeral service at 4pm Friday the Rev. Albert Ledoux at Gibbons Funeral Home, 301 Church Street, Gallitzin, PA 16641. Committal St. Mary Cemetery. The family suggest contributions be made to Orange County Animal Shelter, 11362 Porter Road, Orange, VA 22960 in Joan’s memory.
