Talmadge was born the son of the late Harvey Talmadge Varnam and Lovie Fulford Varnam. He was also preceded in death by a wife, Ada Mae Lancaster Varnam and a wife, Minnie Norris Varnam; a son, James Wilson Varnum; a brother, Hodges Varnam; a grandson, Jimmy Varnum and four brothers-in-law; Wilson Lancaster, S.P. Phelps, Ordell Butterbaugh and Junior Norton. He is survived by a son, Talmadge Barry Varnum and wife Georgia; two daughters, Jean Varnam Galloway and husband Danny and Lois Varnam Benton and husband Howard; one brother, Cortland Varnam and wife Bobbie; four sisters, Ophelia Lancaster, Buena Phelps, Lucille Butterbaugh and Virginia Norton. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Jamie B. Varnum, Sandy V. Smith, John Varnum, Sandra V. White, Sarah V. Gore, Stephen Varnum, Duane Eddie Galloway, Andrea G. White, Gina G. McLeod, Shelly B. Etheridge, Julie B. Phillips, Johanna B. Simmons, and Jason H. Benton. He is also survived by 27 great grandchildren, Carter, Griffin, Sylvia, Dakota, Brittany, Chelsea, Chase, Jared, Logan, Savanna, Tyler, Ashley, Amber, Erick, Gavin, Zack, Carly, Nicole, Amanda, Tyler, Matt, Jonathan, McKenzie, Kenny, Christina, Rachel and Laura and many nieces and nephews and a daughter in law, Emily Gore. He is also survived by "special friend," Leo Fulford. Talmadge lived near and worked on the water most of his life, including being instrumental in digging the Intercoastal Waterway. He retired from Cape Fear Towing. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener. He was active in his church where he served as Sunday School Superintendant. He had also been a Brunswick County Deputy Sheriff.
