John graduated from Peshtigo High School and was a Vietnam War Veteran. John previously worked at Harmon Knitware as a printer, and Thompson Boats. He retired from Badger Paper Mill after 42 years and served on the Board of Directors at Badger Credit Union.
On August 5, 1972, he married the love of his life, Linda (Swiatnicki).
John was an avid deer hunter, and in earlier years, he hunted at his father-in-law's cabin in Breed. He enjoyed hunting at the farm in Athelstane with a special nephew, Pete Thompson, and great-nephews and great-great-nephews. This year he bagged the only Buck at the farm. John always looked forward to his early morning coffee with friends at the local restaurant and creating memories with his children and grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife, Linda;
three daughters: Cheryl (Tim) Meadows, Amy (Joey) Heinz, Kari (Aaron) Gurney;
grandchildren: Colin Meadows, Isaiah, Noah, Ashley and Kaylee Heins, Tyler Koehler, MiKayla Brofka and Zack Wallin;
also survived by his mother-in-law, Marcella Swiatnicki;
many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, great-nephews and many special friends.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by, four brothers: Dale Behnke, Robert Nelson, Roland Nelson and step brother LaVerne Behnke; two sisters:half sister Doris Nelson McBride and step sister Winnie Behnke Thompson; his father-in-law, Edwin; sister-in-law, Melissa; and brother-in-law, David Swiatnicki.
Visitation will be held Friday, January 29, at BERTH & ROSENTHAL FUNERAL HOME from 4 p.m. until time of wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday morning at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH in Peshtigo from 9 a.m. until time of funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Peshtigo.
