Mary was a teacher at her own private seminary for young ladies when she met widower Judge Milton Buckingham Cushing. She was a small woman with a full, round face, and is quoted as radiating kindness and compassion with a keen intellect. Mary would often recall one of her childhood memories; attending her grandfather's funeral with her cousin President John Adams' carriage heading the funeral procession.
